Sun Nov 24 15:45:01 UTC 2024: ## Pakistan Sectarian Violence Leaves 82 Dead, Hundreds Injured

**Peshawar, Pakistan –** At least 82 people have been killed and 156 injured in three days of intense sectarian clashes in Pakistan’s Kurram district, a local official confirmed on Sunday. The violence, which began with the ambush of two Shia Muslim convoys on Thursday, has pitted Shia and Sunni communities against each other in a region with a long history of conflict.

The initial ambushes claimed at least 43 lives, sparking two days of intense gun battles involving both light and heavy weaponry. The death toll includes 66 Shia and 16 Sunni individuals. Around 300 families have fled their homes, and the mobile network and main highway in Kurram remain closed.

Provincial authorities are attempting to mediate a ceasefire. A delegation met with Shia community leaders on Saturday and is scheduled to meet with Sunni leaders on Sunday. However, the negotiators’ helicopter came under fire upon arrival, highlighting the volatile situation. Provincial Law Minister Aftab Alam Afridi stated that establishing a ceasefire is the top priority before addressing the underlying issues.

This latest outbreak of violence follows a similar incident last month that left 16 people dead, and other deadly clashes in July and September. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan reported 79 deaths from sectarian violence between July and October. Protests against the violence erupted in Lahore and Karachi over the weekend. The ongoing instability underscores the deep-seated sectarian tensions in Kurram district, a region grappling with conflict despite its merger with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in 2018.
