Mon Nov 25 10:13:48 UTC 2024: ## Supreme Court Stays Order Directing President to Consider Mercy Plea in Beant Singh Assassination Case
**New Delhi:** The Supreme Court on Monday stayed an order it had issued earlier that day, directing the President’s Secretary to process the mercy petition of Balwant Singh, who is on death row for the 1995 assassination of Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.
The court, headed by Justice B.R. Gavai, initially issued the order directing the President to decide on the petition within two weeks. However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing before the bench after the lunch recess, informed the court that the mercy petition was pending before the Ministry of Home Affairs and not directly before the President. He requested a stay on the order and time to seek instructions from the government. The Supreme Court subsequently stayed its earlier order and adjourned the case.
