SURYAPETA, NOVEMBER 24: Former Minister and Suryapeta MLA Gunta Kandla Jagadish Reddy lauded chess as a mentally stimulating game requiring no physical exertion. He was speaking at a prize distribution ceremony for the joint Nalgonda district open and under-11 and under-15 chess championships held at the TTD Kalyana Mandapam in Suryapeta on Sunday. The event was organized by the district chess association, headed by Ganduri Krupkar.

Reddy, a self-professed chess enthusiast, emphasized the importance of patience and brainpower in the game. He highlighted the crucial role of associations and NGOs in promoting chess, noting their greater impact than government initiatives alone. He reminisced about a time when international chess championships garnered more public attention than cricket. Reddy also commended the participation of many Suryapeta district players in national and international chess competitions, achieving medals at various levels. He praised the district chess association for organizing the tournament and encouraged parents to support their children’s participation in such events, steering them away from excessive cell phone use and promoting alternative activities. He congratulated the winners and encouraged those who didn’t win to continue practicing and strive for success in future competitions. The winners of the open, under-11, and under-15 categories received shields and cash prizes. Several BRS leaders and members of the district chess association were present at the ceremony.
