Mon Nov 25 07:29:44 UTC 2024: ## Sambhal Mosque Survey Turns Violent: Four Dead, Internet Suspended

**Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh:** Four people died in violent clashes that erupted during a survey of the Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday. Police have filed seven FIRs in connection with the violence, naming six individuals and 2,750 unidentified persons. 25 arrests have been made so far. Among those charged are Samajwadi Party MP, Ziaur Rahman Barq, and the son of the local MLA, Suhail Iqbal, accused of inciting the violence.

The violence began around 6:30 AM Sunday when a team of officials, including the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, arrived to conduct a survey of the mosque. The presence of the team triggered a large-scale protest, with an estimated 2,000-3,000 people gathering outside the mosque. The ensuing clashes involved stone-throwing, prompting police to use tear gas and lathi charges to disperse the crowd.

While the administration claims the deaths resulted from attacks by rioters, families of the victims allege police firing was responsible. The Commissioner, however, denied any police fatalities. The four deceased were buried late Sunday night after post-mortem examinations.

A curfew-like situation prevails in Sambhal, with markets closed and internet services suspended until Tuesday. Schools have also been closed today. Furthermore, the District Magistrate has imposed a ban on the entry of outsiders into Sambhal district until December 1st.
