LUCKNOW, INDIA – The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a resounding victory in the Uttar Pradesh by-elections, winning seven out of the nine contested assembly seats. The results, announced today, are being seen as a significant boost for the ruling BJP ahead of the 2025 state assembly elections.
The BJP itself won six seats, while its ally, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), won one. The Samajwadi Party (SP) managed to secure the remaining two seats. The BJP’s victories included the highly contested and Muslim-majority Kunda assembly seat, where BJP candidate Ramveer Singh won by a significant margin of 144,791 votes, a stunning upset for the SP. Other notable BJP wins were in Gaziabad and Phulpur. The SP secured victories in Sirsamau and Karhal.
The by-elections were considered a crucial test of strength for both the BJP and the SP, often described as a “semi-final” before the main state elections. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) also contested the elections, aiming to demonstrate its continuing influence.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath commented on the results, stating, “Unity is strength; division leads to defeat.” Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya attributed the BJP’s success to the government’s welfare schemes, the party’s organizational strength, and the public’s unwavering faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The SP’s Akhilesh Yadav urged party workers to remain vigilant during the counting process. Controversy surrounded the Mirapur constituency, with the SP demanding a recount in several polling booths.
