DETROIT (WXYZ) — Over 110,000 people flocked to Campus Martius Park on Friday for the 21st annual Detroit tree lighting ceremony, marking the start of the holiday season. The event showcased not only the spectacular tree but also the park’s iconic ice rink, a major attraction drawing over a million visitors throughout the holiday season.
Alex Fields, who has overseen the rink’s operation for 18 years, described the challenges and rewards of maintaining such a large rink, especially with unpredictable November weather. He noted the need for frequent Zamboni use during peak times, sometimes as often as every hour and a half. This year’s rink features new technology, including a redesigned cooling system expected to provide more stable ice even in warmer conditions.
The rink, measuring 60 feet by 120 feet, takes approximately two weeks to construct. According to Laura Dean of the Downtown Detroit Partnership, its popularity has led to a nomination for USA Today’s top 10 ice rinks in the nation. Voting is open for 15 more days. The rink is lauded for its picturesque setting, offering skaters a unique downtown holiday experience with opportunities for shopping and dining. It’s also become a popular spot for marriage proposals, with around 20 taking place last year.
The Campus Martius Park ice rink is open daily until March 2nd, offering a festive holiday activity for residents and visitors alike.
