**Chennai, November 24, 2024** – The Tamil Nadu government announced a major boost to its public transportation system, revealing significant progress in fleet modernization and employee benefits. According to an official statement released Saturday, over 2,578 new buses have been added to the state’s fleet since 2021, part of a larger plan to procure 8,682 new vehicles. The government also highlighted the success of its free bus travel scheme for women, noting over 570.86 crore trips were undertaken by women up to October 31st.

Further improvements include the ongoing renovation of older buses. The government allocated funds to upgrade 1,500 older buses in fiscal years 2022-23 and 2023-24, with 1,310 already renovated. Finally, the statement announced that approximately 7,997 transport workers have received retirement benefits totaling ₹2,026 crore.
