**Mumbai, November 25, 2024** – The ruling Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, secured a landslide victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, winning a projected 236 out of 288 seats. The results, announced Saturday, surpassed most exit poll predictions and represent a significant defeat for the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance.
The Mahayuti’s success is attributed by many to popular pro-poor and women-centric schemes like “Ladki Bahin.” Early trends showed a commanding lead for the alliance, exceeding the majority mark of 145 seats early in the counting process.
Celebrations erupted within the BJP, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailing the victory as a testament to the people’s faith in good governance and development. BJP leaders, including Amit Shah and JP Nadda, joined the festivities at party headquarters. CM Eknath Shinde credited the win to teamwork and the success of implemented policies. Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis highlighted the rejection of the opposition’s narrative and lauded the people’s support for PM Modi. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar’s role was also celebrated, with NCP leaders expressing optimism about his potential to lead the state.
The MVA reacted with disappointment and introspection. Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala described the results as “unbelievable and unacceptable,” while other leaders raised concerns about the election process. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut criticized former CJI DY Chandrachud for allegedly facilitating defections. Despite the overall defeat, NCP’s Pune President Deepak Mankar expressed confidence in Ajit Pawar’s leadership.
The election also saw a significant number of women candidates elected, with a majority from the Mahayuti alliance. The absence of a formal Leader of the Opposition emerged as a consequence of the decisive victory. The focus now shifts to the formation of the new government and the announcement of the Chief Minister. While multiple leaders are being discussed, the final decision rests with the Mahayuti leadership.
