Sun Nov 24 03:07:50 UTC 2024: ## Jharkhand’s Ruling Coalition Scores Stunning Victory, Defying Odds

**Ranchi, Jharkhand –** In a stunning upset, the INDIA alliance, led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, secured a resounding victory in the Jharkhand Assembly elections, winning 56 out of 81 seats. This marks a historic win, as it’s the first time an incumbent government has been re-elected in the state since its formation 24 years ago. The victory comes despite a challenging year for Soren, including his arrest on money laundering charges in January.

The BJP, which secured a landslide victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections concurrently, saw a stark contrast in Jharkhand, winning only 24 seats. This underwhelming performance is attributed to several factors, including a perceived lack of engagement with local issues and a weak campaign strategy.

Analysts point to several key factors contributing to the INDIA alliance’s success. Soren’s arrest, paradoxically, galvanized tribal support, fueling a narrative of BJP attempts to destabilize the government. This sentiment was amplified by the INDIA alliance’s sweeping victory in tribal-reserved constituencies, winning 27 out of 28 seats (compared to 2019’s 21 out of 28). The widespread adoption of the slogan, “Jail ka badla vote se” (“Revenge for jail through votes”), further underscored this trend.

The INDIA alliance’s success is also credited to popular welfare schemes, notably the Maiayan Samman Yojna, which disbursed Rs 1,000 to eligible women beneficiaries three times before the election. The scheme reached at least 45 lakh women. Furthermore, strong support from minority communities, including Christians and tribals, proved crucial.

A significant factor in the campaign was the emergence of Kalpana Soren, Hemant Soren’s wife. Her extensive campaigning, ability to connect with voters through multilingual communication (Sadri, Bengali, English, Hindi, and Santhali), and her large rallies were seen as key to boosting the INDIA alliance’s performance. Her role filled the gap left by JMM supremo Shibu Soren’s absence from campaigning.

The BJP’s strategy, relying heavily on outside leaders like Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, instead of focusing on local leadership and local issues, is seen as a major contributor to their defeat. The party’s focus on infiltration, neglecting other local concerns, failed to resonate with voters. The BJP’s loss of 27 out of 28 tribal-reserved seats highlights their failure to connect with this crucial demographic.

The results signal a clear rejection of the BJP’s campaign and strategies in Jharkhand, highlighting the importance of local engagement and responsiveness to specific regional needs in election campaigns.
