**Ranchi, November 23** – The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) led alliance has secured a resounding victory in the recently concluded Jharkhand Assembly elections, winning a second consecutive term in power. The JMM, along with its allies Congress, RJD, and CPI (Marxist-Leninist), secured 56 out of 81 seats.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren retained his seat in Barhait, winning by a significant margin of over 39,791 votes. His wife, Kalpana Soren, also emerged victorious in the Gandey constituency.
The BJP-led NDA, despite an aggressive campaign focusing on issues like infiltration from Bangladesh, secured only 21 seats. BJP National President J.P. Nadda stated that the party would play the role of a constructive opposition. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP co-incharge for the elections, acknowledged the loss as “deeply painful.”
The election, held in two phases on November 13th and 20th, saw a voter turnout of 67.74%. Prominent figures like Babulal Marandi (BJP) and Sudesh Mahto (AJSU) contested the elections, with pre-election predictions varying widely.
The results mark a significant victory for the INDIA bloc, with congratulations pouring in from leaders like Akhilesh Yadav (Samajwadi Party) and Rahul Gandhi (Congress). Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the winning alliance while reaffirming the BJP’s commitment to Jharkhand’s development. Congress leaders attributed the victory to the rejection of the BJP’s polarizing campaign tactics.
The JMM’s strong performance is seen as a testament to Hemant Soren’s leadership, even amidst recent legal challenges. Kalpana Soren’s successful campaign further solidified the JMM’s position. The RJD also exceeded expectations, performing strongly in several constituencies. Hemant Soren expressed gratitude to the people of Jharkhand, describing the alliance’s win as “passing the exam of democracy.”
