**Ranchi, Jharkhand –** Hemant Soren, leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), has secured a resounding victory in the recent Jharkhand Assembly elections, securing a second term as Chief Minister. This triumph comes after a tumultuous year that saw him arrested on corruption charges, face internal party strife, and navigate shifting alliances.
Soren’s arrest in January on charges related to a land scam led to his resignation as Chief Minister and a period of uncertainty for the ruling INDIA alliance. The subsequent defection of his sister-in-law, Sita Soren, to the BJP, further complicated matters. Internal power struggles also emerged, with Champai Soren, a close aide to JMM chief Shibu Soren, briefly serving as Chief Minister before resigning in July following Hemant Soren’s release on bail. Champai Soren later joined the BJP, citing humiliation and alleging infiltration within the state.
Despite these setbacks and challenges in seat-sharing negotiations with coalition partners like the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the JMM significantly improved its performance, winning 34 seats—a substantial increase from the 30 secured in 2019. Strong showings by the Congress, RJD, and CPI (ML) propelled the INDIA alliance to a commanding 56 seats in the 81-member Assembly, leaving the BJP-led alliance with only 24. Soren’s ability to overcome adversity and consolidate support within the coalition has been pivotal to this victory.
