**Jeddah, Saudi Arabia:** The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction concluded its first day in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, setting new records and surprising many with unexpected transfers. A total of 12 marquee players were auctioned first, followed by other players. The auction saw a flurry of high-profile bids, resulting in several players commanding record-breaking sums.
Shreyas Iyer emerged as the most expensive player in IPL history, sold to Punjab Kings for a staggering ₹26.75 crore, surpassing Mitchell Starc’s previous record. This intense bidding war involved Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, highlighting the high demand for the talented Indian batsman.
Rishabh Pant, another highly sought-after player, was acquired by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹27 crore, making him the second most expensive player in the auction. This bid followed a tense battle between Lucknow and Delhi Capitals, with Delhi exercising their Right to Match (RTM) card before ultimately losing out. The Delhi Capitals did however manage to secure Mitchell Starc at ₹11.75 crore.
Other notable sales included Arshdeep Singh (Punjab Kings, ₹18 crore via RTM), Kagiso Rabada (Gujarat Titans, ₹10.75 crore), and Jos Buttler (Gujarat Titans, ₹15.75 crore). Punjab Kings also secured the services of Yuzvendra Chahal for ₹18 crore, making both him and Arshdeep Singh the joint most expensive Indian bowlers. Mohammed Siraj, previously with RCB, moved to Gujarat Titans for ₹12.25 crore.
Liam Livingstone was picked up by RCB for ₹8.75 crore. Several other players were also sold for substantial amounts, showcasing the competitive nature of the auction and the significant investment teams are willing to make. The auction will continue on the next day with the remaining players to be auctioned. The Punjab Kings currently hold the largest remaining purse among all the franchises.
