**Mumbai, India** – Ajit Pawar’s faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) secured a resounding victory over his uncle Sharad Pawar’s faction in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, winning 29 seats in direct contests. The Election Commission’s latest figures show Ajit Pawar’s NCP, part of the ruling Mahayuti alliance, winning or leading in 41 of the 59 seats it contested. In contrast, Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP) secured only 10 victories despite fielding 86 candidates.
The results represent a significant blow to Sharad Pawar, who had urged voters to reject the “traitors” who had split from his party last year to join the BJP-led government. Despite this call, his faction garnered only 11.29% of the total votes, compared to Ajit Pawar’s NCP’s 9.01%.
Notable victories for Ajit Pawar’s faction include Ajit Pawar’s own win over his nephew, Yugendra Pawar, by over 1 lakh votes in a family stronghold. Several other intra-party battles also resulted in wins for Ajit Pawar’s group. Minister Chhagan Bhujbal’s victory, and wins by other ministers such as Aditi Tatkare and Dilip Walse Patil, further solidified their faction’s dominance.
While Sharad Pawar’s faction did secure some victories, including those by Jitendra Awhad, Bapusaheb Pathare and Jayant Patil, the overall outcome firmly establishes Ajit Pawar’s faction as the dominant force within the once-united NCP. The election results underscore the deep rift within the Pawar family and the NCP, setting the stage for a significant realignment of political power in Maharashtra.
