**Chennai, November 24, 2024** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched a revitalization project at Sholinganallur lake, located opposite Infosys on Old Mahabalipuram Road. The initiative, overseen by Zonal Officer B. Rajasekar, aims to enhance the lake’s water storage capacity and overall ecosystem.
The project involves removing invasive water hyacinth, clearing weeds from an afforested bund, and constructing a walking path around the lake’s perimeter. Improvements are also planned for the lake’s central island, a key area for biodiversity. An amphibious machine is currently being used to facilitate the cleanup.
The lake is known for its rich avian life, including the bronze-winged jacana, lesser whistling ducks, fulvous whistling ducks, and whiskered terns. GCC officials hope that the improvements will further enhance the lake’s appeal to various bird species. The project is being carried out under the direction of GCC Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran and Regional Deputy Commissioner — South M.P. Amith.
