**Ranchi, Jharkhand –** Hemant Soren will be sworn in as Chief Minister of Jharkhand on November 28th, following a decisive victory for his Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance in the recent state assembly elections. The JMM secured a commanding 56 seats in the 81-member assembly, significantly outpacing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s 24 seats.
Soren, who faced legal challenges and an arrest by the Enforcement Directorate earlier this year, emerged victorious from the Barhait constituency, defeating his BJP opponent by a substantial margin. His wife, Kalpana Soren, also won her seat. He will meet with the Governor today to formally stake his claim to form the government.
The BJP, despite a high-profile campaign featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders, failed to capitalize on allegations of corruption against the incumbent government. Internal party divisions and a perceived lack of a strong local tribal leader in their campaign are cited as contributing factors to their loss. Analysts suggest the BJP’s focus on alleged infiltration from Bangladesh and corruption, while garnering a 33.18% vote share, proved insufficient to overcome the JMM’s popular support.
The JMM’s success is attributed to its focus on welfare schemes targeting the rural population. Initiatives like the Maiyan Samman Yojna (financial assistance for women) and farm loan waivers resonated strongly with voters. The party’s victory is also viewed as a testament to the continued loyalty of tribal communities to the Soren family’s legacy in Jharkhand politics. Soren’s victory speech characterized the INDIA bloc’s strong showing as a testament to the success of democracy.
