Sun Nov 24 02:10:58 UTC 2024: **Sikh Community Marks Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheedi Diwas**
NEW DELHI, November 24, 2024 – The Sikh community today observes Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheedi Diwas, commemorating the martyrdom of the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, who was executed on this day in 1675.
Guru Tegh Bahadur, born April 21, 1621, was known for his piety and selfless nature. During the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, known for his religious intolerance, Kashmiri Pandits sought refuge with the Guru, appealing for protection from persecution. To defend religious freedom, Guru Tegh Bahadur presented himself to Aurangzeb. Despite being offered the choice to convert to Islam, he refused, choosing martyrdom instead. He was executed in Chandni Chowk, Delhi.
His sacrifice is remembered as a symbol of courage and a testament to the importance of religious freedom and human rights. Gurdwaras across the world hold special services, including kirtan (religious hymns) and akhand path (continuous recitation of scripture), to honor his memory. Many Sikhs also dedicate the day to charitable acts, helping the needy and underprivileged. The day serves as a reminder of his teachings and inspires Sikhs to uphold his ideals of justice and compassion.
