**THOOTHUKUDI, INDIA (November 23, 2024)** – Ashwani Kumar, president of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), stressed the critical role of efficient port operations in enhancing India’s global trade during an awards ceremony in Thoothukudi on Saturday. The event, organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), recognized outstanding port users and exporters.
Kumar highlighted the need for collaboration between port officials, customs authorities, and exporters to streamline processes and create a seamless infrastructure. He lauded the initiatives undertaken by the V.O. Chidambaranar Port and ICCI as significant steps towards boosting India’s export development.
D.R. Koddeswaran, president of ICCI Tuticorin, emphasized the positive impact of infrastructure improvements, citing the expansion of the Nagapattinam-Thoothukudi highway and the nearing completion of the Thoothukudi airport expansion project. These improvements are expected to significantly improve goods transportation and attract further business to the region.
The ICCI presented awards across six categories. In a memorandum to FIEO, ICCI requested the establishment of an additional drug controller at the Tuticorin port, NABL-accredited labs and textile testing facilities, and the opening of a spices board office in Thoothukudi to further expedite export clearances. The event was also attended by Israr Ahmed, vice-president of FIEO, and K. Ponvenkatesh, Secretary of ICCI, Tuticorin.
