**THENI, INDIA (November 24, 2024)** – Over 200 people participated in a “Dia Walkathon” in Theni on Sunday, raising awareness about diabetes on World Diabetes Day. Organized by Nalam Hospital, a multi-specialty diabetes care center, the event aimed to engage the community in combating the rising prevalence of the disease. Superintendent of Police Shiva Prasad flagged off the walkathon, which included cash prizes for winners and consolation prizes for all participants.
The event highlighted the alarming statistics surrounding diabetes in India, which carries the unfortunate distinction of being the “diabetes capital of the world,” with 25% of the global 828 million cases. One in seven Indian adults lives with diabetes, a fourfold increase since 1990. The hospital emphasized the link between obesity and diabetes, noting that a 10% weight reduction can significantly improve diabetes management and even reverse it in early stages. They recommended at least 150 minutes of walking per week for diabetic patients, in addition to dietary control. The walkathon served as a call to action, urging preventive measures to address this growing health crisis.
