**Mumbai, India –** The Indian National Congress (INC) suffered a devastating defeat in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, achieving its worst-ever performance in the state and significantly weakening its position within the opposition INDIA bloc. The results, announced Saturday, paint a bleak picture for the party, overshadowed by a BJP landslide victory and the better performance of other INDIA alliance partners.
In Maharashtra, the Congress, contesting 101 seats, secured only 16, resulting in a dismal 16% strike rate – the lowest among the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance. The BJP, in contrast, boasted an 88.6% strike rate. While the Congress held the highest vote share within the MVA (12.42%), it was outperformed by other parties, highlighting a failure to galvanize support. High-profile Congress leaders, including former Chief Ministers Prithviraj Chavan and Vilasrao Deshmukh’s son Dhiraj Deshmukh, lost their seats. The NCP and Shiv Sena (UBT) also suffered heavy losses.
The BJP’s sweeping victory in Maharashtra, coupled with the party’s strong showing in recent Haryana elections, significantly boosts the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) power in the Rajya Sabha. The MVA’s poor performance all but eliminates the possibility of winning Rajya Sabha seats from Maharashtra in the future.
Although the INDIA bloc secured a victory in Jharkhand, the Congress’s diminished role in that win, as JMM emerged dominant, further underscores the party’s declining influence. In Jharkhand, while the Congress gained two percentage points in vote share compared to 2019 (reaching 15.56%), it won only 16 out of the total seats. The JMM, led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, secured a significant victory winning 34 seats.
The Congress’s poor performance across multiple states, including Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir, raises serious questions about the party’s election strategy and the effectiveness of Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. While the party won some by-elections in Kerala and Karnataka, these victories are dwarfed by the scale of the losses in Maharashtra and elsewhere. The party is now facing intense introspection as it enters the 2025 election cycle significantly weakened.
