Sun Nov 24 01:40:00 UTC 2024: ## BJP Suffers Setback in Karnataka By-elections, Internal Divisions Blamed
**Bengaluru, November 24, 2024** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a significant defeat in all three Karnataka Assembly by-elections held on November 13th, highlighting internal weaknesses and organizational shortcomings. Despite pre-election campaigns focusing on alleged irregularities involving the Chief Minister and other scandals, the BJP and its ally, the JD(S), failed to gain traction.
Analysts attribute the losses to the BJP’s weakened cadre, a problem acknowledged by party leaders for some time. While State president B.Y. Vijayendra prioritized cadre strengthening upon assuming his role a year ago, the by-election results indicate limited progress. The party’s inability to effectively engage its workers is seen as a major factor hindering their statewide campaigns against the Congress government.
Further compounding the problem is the ongoing factionalism within the BJP’s state unit. Indecisiveness from the central leadership in addressing these internal divisions has hampered organizational efforts. The by-election defeat has emboldened disgruntled leaders, with some, like Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, openly demanding a leadership change.
The results also exposed the BJP’s lack of influence among backward classes (OBCs). A stronger outreach to OBC voters could have significantly improved their performance. The late entry of the sons of two former Chief Ministers into the by-elections, seen as contradicting the party’s anti-dynastic politics stance, is also cited as a contributing factor to the defeat.
The setback has dealt a blow to the BJP’s morale, particularly as they were escalating attacks against the Congress government and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The party now faces the challenge of addressing its internal divisions and strengthening its organizational structure to regain its footing in Karnataka.
