**Mumbai, November 23** – Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar secured a resounding victory in the Baramati constituency in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, defeating his nephew Yugendra Pawar by a massive margin of 100,899 votes. The final tally showed Ajit Pawar receiving 181,132 votes compared to Yugendra Pawar’s 80,233. The win marks a significant victory for Ajit Pawar, who faced a strong challenge from his uncle, Sharad Pawar’s faction of the NCP.
The election was highly anticipated, framed as a showdown between the two Pawar factions following Ajit Pawar’s controversial split from his uncle’s party earlier this year. The campaign saw intense rallies and roadshows in the constituency. Ajit Pawar’s win is seen as a personal triumph, bolstering his position within the Mahayuti (BJP-led) alliance, which is projected to win a majority in the state assembly. His performance in Baramati, coupled with the strong showing of his faction of the NCP (which is reportedly leading in 35 seats), increases speculation about his potential to become Chief Minister. However, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has stated that the alliance will collectively decide on the Chief Minister’s position after the final results are declared.
Ajit Pawar addressed concerns about EVM tampering, citing previous electoral losses attributed to the same technology. He expressed gratitude to the people of Maharashtra and emphasized the Mahayuti alliance’s commitment to the state’s development. His wife, Sunetra Pawar, also expressed her gratitude for the support shown to Ajit Pawar. The BJP’s Amit Shah congratulated both Ajit Pawar and Chief Minister Shinde following early projections of a Mahayuti victory. The overall election results are still being tallied but indicate a clear victory for the Mahayuti alliance.
