CHENNAI, INDIA – Several Indian Premier League (IPL) teams are set to enter the 2025 mega auction in search of new captains. Among the teams facing leadership changes are Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Delhi Capitals (DC). While Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will also be looking for a new captain, their retention of Virat Kohli gives them a strong potential replacement for the outgoing Faf du Plessis.

LSG released KL Rahul, their captain since 2022, ahead of the 2025 retentions. KKR surprisingly did not retain Shreyas Iyer, their captain who led them to their third IPL title in 2024. Both Rahul and Iyer are expected to be highly sought-after in the mega auction.

Punjab Kings, following Shikhar Dhawan’s retirement in August 2024, will also be seeking a new leader. With a significant purse of ₹110.5 crore and four Right to Match (RTM) cards, they are expected to be active bidders, potentially targeting Iyer or Rishabh Pant.

Delhi Capitals, who had Rishabh Pant as captain from 2021 to 2024, will also participate in the captaincy hunt at the 2025 mega auction. The auction is expected to be highly competitive, with several teams vying for top-tier players to fill their leadership void.
