**Jhansi, India** – Two more infants rescued from a devastating fire at the Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) have died, bringing the total death toll to 17. The fire occurred on the night of November 15th.
Thirty-nine newborns were rescued from the blaze, but according to Medical College Principal Dr. Narendra Singh Sengar, ten died on the night of the fire itself. The two additional deaths occurred on Saturday, bringing the total to 17. Dr. Sengar confirmed that both infants, weighing 800 grams each (one with a congenital heart defect), succumbed to pre-existing illnesses. Post-mortems have been conducted, and the bodies have been released to their families.
Meanwhile, Congress leaders Ajay Rai and Tanuj Punia are scheduled to visit Jhansi and the medical college to meet with the families affected by the tragedy.
