**Mumbai, India –** The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies secured a resounding victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, winning 235 out of 288 seats. This marks the BJP’s best-ever performance in the state, a significant blow to the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
The BJP alone secured 132 seats, with its coalition partners, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena (80 seats) and Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) (52 seats) contributing to the landslide win. The MVA, which had performed strongly in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, received less than a quarter of the seats won by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The defeat is particularly harsh for Uddhav Thackeray (Shiv Sena UBT) and Sharad Pawar (NCP SP), who lost their party symbols to factions led by their former allies. The election was seen as a crucial test for both leaders, and their significant loss casts doubt on their political futures.
While the NDA celebrated its triumph in Maharashtra, the opposition Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-led alliance achieved a victory in Jharkhand, securing 56 seats. The NDA, which focused on anti-infiltration and government schemes in its campaign, won 24 seats in the state.
Elsewhere, Parliamentary by-polls resulted in a tie between the BJP and Congress, with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra achieving a significant victory in Wayanad, Kerala, and the BJP winning in Nanded, Maharashtra. Mixed results were seen in the 48 Assembly by-polls across various states. The NDA gained ground in Assam, Bihar, and Rajasthan; Congress saw some success in Karnataka; Trinamool Congress swept Bengal; and Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party suffered a setback in Uttar Pradesh.
