KOLHAPUR, MAHARASHTRA – Following the announcement of the Maharashtra Assembly election results, where the BJP secured a majority, a celebratory accident involving newly-elected independent MLA Shivaji Patil has resulted in injuries. Patil, who won the Chandgad constituency, was participating in a victory procession when a fire broke out during a Holi celebration.

The incident occurred in Mahagaon, when a JCB machine was used to throw colored powder (gulal). The powder ignited, causing burns to Patil and three to four others. Initial reports suggest that the fire may have been started by the powder’s contact with a spark or heat source from the JCB. The incident was captured on camera. Several women participating in a puja ceremony for Patil were also injured when a large amount of the burning gulal fell from above. The ensuing panic led to a stampede at the scene.

Separately, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray expressed surprise and skepticism at the election results, describing them as “unexpected” and questioning their authenticity. He stated that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, comprising Shiv Sena, Congress, and NCP, suffered a major setback, winning approximately 45 seats. Thackeray attributed the BJP’s victory to a “tsunami” rather than a wave, citing public anger over unemployment and agricultural issues. He also questioned the rapid shift in public opinion since the Lok Sabha elections four months prior, where the MVA had won a significant majority.
