Sun Nov 24 08:57:02 UTC 2024: ## Congress Wins Close Nanded Lok Sabha By-Election in Maharashtra
**Nanded, Maharashtra –** The Congress party secured a narrow victory in the Nanded Lok Sabha by-election held on November 20th, defeating the BJP by a mere 1,457 votes. Ravindra Chavan, son of the deceased MP Vasant Chavan, secured 586,788 votes against BJP candidate Santukrao Hambard’s 585,331 votes. Vinchit Bahujan Aghadi candidate Avinash Vishwanath finished a distant third with 80,179 votes. The by-election, necessitated by the death of sitting MP Vasant Chavan, saw a voter turnout of 67.81%, exceeding the 2024 Lok Sabha election projections by 7%.
The victory was hard-fought, with initial trends showing fluctuating leads for both candidates. While the Congress celebrated its win, the results stand in stark contrast to the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections, where the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition suffered a resounding defeat. The Congress, in particular, performed poorly, winning only 16 seats in the Assembly election, a far cry from its hopes after the Lok Sabha by-election results. Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) won 20 seats, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP managed only 10. The unexpected losses for the MVA coalition have left its strategists reassessing their approach ahead of the upcoming general elections.
