Sat Nov 23 13:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Bluesky Soars: Elon Musk’s X Drives Users to Alternative Social Media Platform

**SAN FRANCISCO** – The alternative social media platform Bluesky is experiencing explosive growth, fueled in part by dissatisfaction with Elon Musk’s leadership of X (formerly Twitter). Since the recent election, Bluesky has added a million users in a single week, bringing its total user count to 20 million.

The platform, founded by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, offers a text-based interface similar to X, allowing posts up to 300 characters. However, Bluesky distinguishes itself through its decentralized architecture, allowing users to connect to servers tailored to specific interests, a design similar to Mastodon and Discord. This open framework contrasts sharply with the centralized control often associated with traditional social networks.

Bluesky’s growth has attracted notable figures, including celebrities Ben Stiller, Stephen King, and Lizzo. While significantly smaller than X or Meta’s Threads (which boasts over 175 million monthly active users), Bluesky’s rapid expansion highlights a growing desire among users for alternative social media options.

Dorsey, a member of Bluesky’s board of directors, has publicly criticized Musk’s handling of X. This, coupled with Musk’s vocal support for the recent election outcome on X, seems to have driven many users to seek a different platform.

While Bluesky initially operated on an invitation-only basis, it opened its doors to all users in February. The platform is available on both iOS and Android. Although Bluesky maintains a traditional corporate structure, its stated goal is to empower creators and shift content control away from a centralized authority. Whether Bluesky can maintain its momentum and challenge the dominance of X and Threads remains to be seen, but its recent growth is undeniable.
