Sat Nov 23 14:37:52 UTC 2024: ## Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Wins Wayanad By-Election in Landslide Victory
**Kerala, India** – Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra secured a resounding victory in the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election, defeating CPI(M) candidate Sathyan Mokeri by a margin of over 410,000 votes. The election, which garnered national attention due to Gandhi Vadra’s electoral debut, saw her garner over 617,942 votes. BJP candidate Navya Haridas finished a distant third with approximately 109,000 votes.
The by-election was necessitated by the resignation of Rahul Gandhi, who retained his Rae Bareli seat after winning Wayanad in the 2024 general elections. While Wayanad is considered a Congress stronghold, Mokeri had significantly reduced the Congress’s margin in the 2014 election. This year’s election saw a voter turnout of 64.72%, considerably lower than the 2024 general election (72.92%) and the 2019 election (80.33%). The low turnout prompted speculation about voter dissatisfaction, with some attributing it to the ongoing Waqf land dispute and the aftermath of devastating landslides in the region.
Gandhi Vadra’s campaign focused on addressing farmers’ issues and boosting tourism in the hill district. Her opponents criticized the Congress party’s perceived neglect of Wayanad’s concerns and accused the family of prioritizing dynasty over the needs of the constituency. Despite these criticisms, Gandhi Vadra’s victory surpassed her brother’s previous winning margin by over 100,000 votes.
The win is seen as a boost for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala, while the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) expressed disappointment. The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) acknowledged the outcome but noted it was a relief for their overall standing. The result will see Gandhi Vadra join her brother in Parliament, giving the opposition a significant boost. Gandhi Vadra expressed gratitude to the people of Wayanad and vowed to be their voice in Parliament.
