Sat Nov 23 15:03:20 UTC 2024: ## Samajwadi Party Retains Karhal Seat in By-election, Defeating BJP
**Karhal, Uttar Pradesh:** The Samajwadi Party (SP) has retained the Karhal assembly seat in a closely watched by-election, defying a strong campaign by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). SP candidate Tej Pratap Yadav, son of SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, defeated BJP’s Anujesh Yadav by a significant margin of 14,725 votes.
Despite the BJP deploying senior leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak and several ministers, in a concerted effort to wrest the seat, the SP’s Yadav vote-bank proved decisive. The strong family unity within the Yadav clan is credited with securing the victory for Tej Pratap Yadav. The BJP’s efforts to break into the SP’s stronghold were ultimately unsuccessful.
The by-election also saw the forfeiture of security deposits by five candidates, including the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) nominee. The SP’s victory is seen as reaffirming the party’s dominance in the Karhal constituency.
