Sat Nov 23 16:19:18 UTC 2024: ## Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Wins Wayanad By-Poll in Landslide Victory

**Kalpetta/Kochi, November 23, 2024** – Priyanka Gandhi Vadra secured a resounding victory in the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election on Saturday, winning by a massive margin of 410,931 votes. The Congress leader polled 622,338 votes, significantly outpacing her nearest rival, Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India (CPI), who received 211,407 votes. The BJP’s Navya Haridas finished a distant third with 109,939 votes.

Vadra’s victory was never in doubt, maintaining a comfortable lead throughout the vote count. While the Congress had aimed for a five lakh vote majority, the final margin, though impressive, fell short of this target. The lower-than-expected voter turnout of 64.72% (a 9% decrease from the previous election) raised concerns for the United Democratic Front (UDF), but appeared to impact the opposition candidates more significantly.

Mokeri, who performed strongly against Congress in the 2014 election, attributed Vadra’s success to her personal campaign, emphasizing family sacrifices and drawing parallels to Indira Gandhi. He acknowledged that the campaign focused less on political messaging and more on emotional appeal. He also noted a significant drop in his own vote count compared to previous elections, suggesting that Rahul Gandhi’s 2019 entry into the constituency created a challenging landscape for the Left. The CPI plans to analyze whether anti-incumbency against the state government also contributed to their defeat.

In a post on X, Vadra expressed gratitude to the electorate and pledged to represent their hopes and dreams in Parliament. The by-election was necessitated by Rahul Gandhi’s resignation from the Lok Sabha seat after his conviction in a defamation case.
