**THIRUVANANTHAPURAM** – The successful run of the Tamil film “Amaran” has brought renewed attention to the life and sacrifice of Major Mukund Varadarajan, a brave soldier whose story inspired the movie. Dr. George Varghese, father-in-law of the late Major, expressed immense pride in the film’s portrayal of his son-in-law’s heroism and the enduring love story between Mukund and his wife, Indhu Rebecca Varghese.
“Amaran,” directed by Rajkumar Periyasamy, depicts the couple’s romance and Mukund’s ultimate sacrifice during a terrorist encounter in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014. The film stars Sai Pallavi as Indhu and Sivakarthikeyan as Mukund. The actors reportedly contacted Dr. Varghese and his family prior to filming, showing respect for the family’s story.
Dr. Varghese, initially hesitant about his daughter’s relationship with a soldier due to the inherent risks, revealed that the couple’s unwavering love convinced him. He shared his pride in Indhu’s support of Mukund throughout his military career and her continued belief in his spirit, even after his death. Indhu, now an English teacher in Sydney, cooperated with the film’s production, hoping to share Mukund’s legacy with the world. Major Mukund was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra for his bravery. Dr. Varghese, who resides in Thiruvananthapuram with his wife, also expressed his desire to meet actor Shyamaprasad, who portrayed him in the film. The sentiment was reciprocated by Shyamaprasad, who voiced his deep respect for Dr. Varghese. The film’s success serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Major Mukund Varadarajan, a true hero.
