**New Delhi:** Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis secured a resounding victory in the Nagpur South West assembly constituency, defeating Congress candidate Prafulla Vinodrao Gudadhe by over 39,710 votes. This marks Fadnavis’s fifth consecutive assembly election win since 1999, solidifying his stronghold in the Vidarbha region.
Fadnavis, a prominent BJP leader, has served as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister twice. His win comes amidst speculation about his potential return to the Chief Minister’s post. Gudadhe, who previously lost to Fadnavis in 2014 by a larger margin, had campaigned on claims of neglect by the incumbent MLA and alleged commercially biased development projects.
The Nagpur South West constituency is crucial, as Vidarbha, encompassing 62 of Maharashtra’s 288 assembly seats, is considered a vital region in state politics. The Congress had predicted a potential upset, highlighting perceived BJP shortcomings in the region. However, Fadnavis’s victory underscores the BJP’s continued strength in Vidarbha.
