Sat Nov 23 07:59:12 UTC 2024: ## UN Adopts Resolution Paving Way for Treaty on Crimes Against Humanity

**United Nations, November 23, 2024** – A key United Nations General Assembly committee has unanimously approved a resolution initiating negotiations for a landmark treaty to prevent and punish crimes against humanity. This follows the withdrawal of contentious amendments proposed by Russia, which had threatened to derail the effort.

The resolution, adopted by consensus after tense negotiations, sets a timetable for the treaty’s creation, including preparatory sessions in 2026 and 2027, and three-week negotiating sessions in 2028 and 2029. While Russia abstained from the consensus, stating its continued support for the convention, human rights advocates hailed the decision as a significant victory.

Richard Dicker of Human Rights Watch called the agreement “an historic achievement,” emphasizing the importance of ending impunity for crimes against humanity witnessed in various global conflicts. The new treaty aims to address a gap in international law, as existing treaties cover war crimes, genocide, and torture but lack a specific instrument for crimes against humanity.

The International Criminal Court (ICC), which prosecutes such crimes but lacks jurisdiction over many countries, will be central to the treaty’s implementation. Supporters, including Mexico and Gambia, emphasized the treaty’s potential to strengthen international justice and provide a stronger voice for victims. While some expressed concern about the extended timeline, the overall sentiment was one of cautious optimism and hope for a future with fewer atrocities. The resolution is expected to receive final approval at the General Assembly on December 4th.
