Sat Nov 23 13:23:25 UTC 2024: ## Alappuzha Launches District-Wide Campaign to Combat Antibiotic Resistance

**ALAPPUZHA, Kerala, November 23, 2024** – The Alappuzha district in Kerala has launched a comprehensive campaign to combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The “Alappuzha Model of Antibiotic Resistance Awareness and Mitigation” (AMARAM) aims to educate the public about the dangers of antibiotic misuse and promote responsible antibiotic use.

Inaugurated by Agriculture Minister P. Prasad, the campaign will focus on raising awareness through rallies, exhibitions, and educational programs. Minister Prasad stressed the global threat posed by AMR, highlighting the dangers of unscientific and self-prescribed use of antibiotics, antivirals, and similar medications in humans, animals, and plants. He emphasized the importance of preventing the development of drug-resistant pathogens, a concern that has been a priority since the first Pinarayi Vijayan government.

AMARAM’s initial phase will target twelve grama panchayats, transforming local bodies and medical facilities into “antibiotic-smart” entities. Funding for the project will be provided by local bodies, with medical officers serving as implementing officers. The initiative seeks to establish Alappuzha as a model for effective AMR control through localized interventions. The district panchayat president, K.G. Rajeshwari, presided over the launch event.
