Fri Nov 22 06:55:52 UTC 2024: ## World AIDS Day 2024: “Take the Rights Path” to End AIDS

**Geneva, Switzerland** – World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1st, will this year focus on addressing health inequalities under the theme “Take the Rights Path: My Health, My Right!” The World Health Organization (WHO), along with global partners and communities, is urging immediate action to combat the disparities hindering progress towards ending the AIDS epidemic.

First established in 1988 by WHO public information officers James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, World AIDS Day serves as a crucial platform to raise awareness, show support for people living with HIV, and remember those lost to AIDS-related illnesses. While significant strides have been made in prevention, treatment, and care, HIV remains a major public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

This year’s focus emphasizes the right to health, highlighting the need for equitable access to life-saving medications, education, and the elimination of stigma and discrimination against those living with HIV. The WHO stresses that achieving the goals of zero new infections and zero discrimination requires a collective global effort.

To reduce the risk of HIV infection, the WHO recommends several key preventative measures: practicing safe sex with consistent condom use; regular HIV testing; considering pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) if at high risk; avoiding needle sharing; seeking timely treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs); avoiding contact with blood and bodily fluids; ensuring safe medical practices; getting vaccinated against hepatitis; and educating oneself and others about HIV transmission and prevention.

The WHO emphasizes that while significant progress has been made, continued dedication and collective action are vital to achieving a world free from AIDS. The organization encourages everyone to participate in World AIDS Day activities and advocate for health equity for all.
