Wed Nov 20 06:57:22 UTC 2024: ## Medical Student Dies After Alleged Ragging, 15 Seniors Arrested

**Patan, Gujarat –** An 18-year-old first-year MBBS student, Anil Methaniya, died after allegedly being subjected to a prolonged ragging session at GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Dharpur Patan, Gujarat. Fifteen senior students have been arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, following the incident which occurred Saturday night.

According to police, Methaniya and other first-year students were forced to stand for hours during a “introduction” session – a term often used to describe ragging activities. Methaniya collapsed and subsequently died after reportedly standing for three hours. His cousin, Gaurav Methaniya, described receiving a frantic call informing them of his hospitalization and subsequent death.

The family, who reside over 150 km away in Surendranagar district, expressed outrage and grief. Gaurav questioned the future of the arrested seniors as medical professionals, stating, “Those who are doing these acts have a criminal mind… What kind of doctors will they become with such criminal minds? Their studies should be stopped and they must be sentenced to life imprisonment.” He described Anil as an exceptional student, the first in his family to pursue MBBS.

The college’s anti-ragging committee’s investigation revealed that 15 seniors had ragged 11 freshers, forcing them to stand for extended periods, sing, dance, and use slang. The University Grants Commission’s ban on ragging has been reiterated following this tragic event, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement against this form of harassment.
