**New Delhi, November 20, 2024** – The Indian government is set to introduce new regulations requiring mandatory verification and stamping of all traffic speed radar equipment. The move, announced by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, aims to enhance road safety and ensure the accuracy of speed enforcement nationwide.
The Legal Metrology Division finalized the draft rules after consulting with various stakeholders, including the Indian Institute of Legal Metrology, regional laboratories, manufacturers, and vehicle certification organizations. These new rules, an amendment to the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, will specifically apply to microwave Doppler radar devices used for measuring vehicle speeds.
All speed measurement devices will now require verification and official stamping before they can be deployed. This process is intended to guarantee the accuracy of speed and distance readings, which are crucial for effective traffic law enforcement. The government believes that accurate speed detection is vital for identifying traffic violations and deterring dangerous driving behaviors, ultimately contributing to improved road safety records. The ministry expects to formally notify the rules shortly.
