Wed Nov 20 09:08:19 UTC 2024: ## BJP Leader Surrounded Amidst Maharashtra Election Cash Distribution Allegations
**Virar, Maharashtra –** Tensions flared in Virar, Maharashtra on Tuesday as allegations of vote-buying surfaced on the eve of the state assembly elections. BJP General Secretary Vinod Tawde was surrounded by Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) workers at a hotel, who demanded an investigation into claims of cash distribution to voters. Other parties also protested Tawde’s presence, citing violations of the Model Code of Conduct.
The BVA, along with the Indian National Congress, questioned Tawde’s presence in Virar, arguing that his visit violated Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines. While Tawde claimed he was holding an internal party meeting, the BJP’s national spokesperson countered that he was present to monitor and counter any opposition violations.
The ECI’s Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the 72 hours preceding an election prohibits the presence of out-of-constituency campaign workers after the campaign period ends. While state-level party office-bearers are exempt, their movement is restricted. The ECI mandates local authorities to monitor hotels, guesthouses, and entry points to ensure compliance.
Following the incident, the Election Commission filed an FIR against Tawde and two others, while a separate FIR was filed against BVA workers. The charges relate to violations of the Representation of the People Act and the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita. The incident highlights the heightened scrutiny and tensions surrounding the final hours of the Maharashtra State Assembly elections.
