Wed Nov 20 01:50:00 UTC 2024: ## India’s Playing XI Takes Shape Ahead of Perth Test, Key Battles Brewing
**Perth, Australia –** With the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy just days away, the Indian cricket team’s final eleven is taking shape following intense training sessions at the Optus Stadium. While persistent rain interrupted practice, key observations offer strong hints about the team composition.
The batting line-up appears to be solidifying around the core of established players like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. However, several intriguing potential selections have emerged. Dhruv Jurel, a 23-year-old wicket-keeper batsman, impressed with his batting prowess, potentially securing a spot in the Test XI as a specialist batsman. His performance, alongside impressive displays by Devdutt Padikkal (called back from India A after Shubman Gill’s injury), strongly suggests they are in contention. The pairing of Padikkal with Kohli and Jurel with Rishabh Pant during practice nets further strengthens this indication. Sarfaraz Khan, the current No. 6, also practiced but was mostly seen facing throwdowns. Abhimanyu Easwaran, the specialist opener, had limited opportunities due to rain.
The bowling attack remains a point of intrigue. While Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy and his opening partnership with Mohammed Siraj are confirmed, the third seamer is still undecided. Prasidh Krishna, who bowled effectively during practice, seems to be a strong contender, having impressed with his height and bounce, even causing Kohli to edge the ball. However, Harshit Rana, who has consistently performed well in Perth, is also considered a strong possibility. Akash Deep, the incumbent No. 3 pacer, also participated in the practice session. The selection of a fourth seamer, potentially Rana, or the inclusion of seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, will influence the choice for the No. 8 batsman.
The battle for the No. 8 spot is between experienced off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and others. Ashwin’s experience on surfaces similar to those favoured by Nathan Lyon would seem to be a strong advantage.
While several key positions remain up in the air, India seems to be converging on a playing XI that promises to be competitive, even considering the absence of several key players. The next two days will likely reveal the final lineup before the first Test commences on Friday.
