**Rio de Janeiro, Brazil** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to global health initiatives, pledging continued support to the World Health Organization (WHO) following the organization’s first-ever Investment Round. The event, held concurrently with the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Brazil, raised $1.7 billion towards the WHO’s $7.1 billion goal for its global health strategy. This represents 53% funding for the 14th General Programme of Work, projected to save an additional 40 million lives over the next four years.
Addressing WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (“Tulsi Bhai,” as PM Modi affectionately referred to him), the Prime Minister highlighted India’s proactive role in integrating technology into its health sector and its intention to further strengthen global health efforts. He emphasized that a healthy planet is essential for a better future.
World leaders attending the summit reaffirmed their commitment to global health security and equitable access to healthcare, underscoring the WHO’s crucial role in global health governance and the need for stable, transparent funding. The Investment Round was specifically endorsed as a vital mechanism for securing additional resources for the WHO’s activities. The WHO currently has $3.8 billion towards its funding goal.
