VIJAYAWADA, November 20, 2024 – The Andhra Pradesh state government is exploring the outsourcing of road maintenance as a pilot project, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced in the Assembly on Tuesday. The initiative, targeting East and West Godavari districts, aims to address the widespread pothole problem plaguing the state’s roads. While ₹850 crore is already allocated for current repairs, the government hopes outsourcing will lead to significant improvements in time for the upcoming January festival season.
The plan involves inviting tenders for a private agency to maintain the roads in a manner similar to national highways. While tolls will be introduced, they will be limited to buses, cars, and trucks, and will not apply between villages and mandal headquarters. The success of the pilot program will determine whether the model is expanded statewide.
