Wed Nov 20 01:21:00 UTC 2024: ## India Aims to Double Coffee Production and Exports by 2034

**Madikeri, Karnataka, November 20, 2024** – The Coffee Board of India has unveiled a decade-long plan to dramatically boost the country’s coffee industry. Announced by Chairman M.J. Dinesh at the Karnataka Planters’ Association annual conference, the initiative aims to double both coffee production and exports by 2034.

The ambitious plan involves several key strategies. This includes establishing 100 farmer producer organizations (FPOs) nationwide, with a focus on 60 in Karnataka, to improve market access and efficiency. Additionally, the board will support 10,000 small farmers in cultivating specialty coffee varieties for premium export markets.

To increase domestic consumption, the plan targets the creation of 10,000 coffee kiosks, primarily operated by women entrepreneurs. This aims to raise India’s per capita coffee consumption from 107 grams to 250 grams within the next ten years.

The Coffee Board also envisions a significant increase in overall coffee production, aiming to nearly triple it from 3.7 lakh tonnes in 2024-25 to 9 lakh tonnes by 2047. To reduce reliance on expensive manual labor (currently costing ₹1200-1300 crore annually for harvesting), the board is collaborating with IIT Kharagpur to develop mechanized harvesting solutions.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka Planters’ Association is advocating for government support, including insurance coverage for coffee farmers under the PM Fasal Bima Yojana and assistance in promoting brand identity and reducing import duties on agricultural equipment.
