**CHENNAI, November 20, 2024** – All teaching and non-teaching staff at Tamil Nadu state universities will now be required to use biometric attendance systems, effective immediately. This decision, announced by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Higher Education Department on Tuesday, aims to address concerns about staff arriving late and leaving early without authorization.

The circular cited the negative impact of such practices on the universities’ reputation and the potential for student unrest and strained relationships between students and staff. The new system mandates biometric registration upon both entry and exit from the university each day.
