Mon Nov 18 20:52:00 UTC 2024: ## Cauvery Delta Bathed in Beneficial Monsoon Rains; More Expected
**Thanjavur, November 19, 2024** – The Cauvery delta region experienced moderate to heavy rainfall on Monday, November 18th, 2024, bringing much-needed moisture for the ongoing samba crop. The rainfall, part of a largely beneficial northeast monsoon season, has been particularly welcomed by farmers.
Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district received the highest amount of rainfall, recording 19 cm in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Monday. Other areas reporting significant rainfall include Kodiyakkarai (15 cm), Thiruthuraipoondi (10 cm), and several locations in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts. The downpour prompted a precautionary school holiday in Thanjavur district.
While the rain has led to water stagnation in parts of the Big Temple complex in Thanjavur, Cauvery Dhanapalan, president of Tamil Nadu Vivasaya Sangankalin Kootamaippu, stated that the monsoon has been largely beneficial for the samba crop, which is currently 50-90 days old. The timely rainfall has reduced the need for urea and pesticides.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast continued rainfall for the delta region, with heavy rain likely in isolated places across several districts, including Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, and Karaikal on Tuesday, November 19th. In Tiruchirappalli, overcast skies and lower temperatures have prevailed following recent rain.
