Mon Nov 18 21:51:00 UTC 2024: ## UK Slaps New Sanctions on Iran for Supplying Weapons to Russia

**London, November 19, 2024** – The United Kingdom imposed new sanctions on Iran on Monday for providing ballistic missiles and other weaponry to Russia, escalating tensions amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. The sanctions, announced by Foreign Secretary David Lammy at the UN Security Council, target Iran’s national airline and state-owned shipping company for their role in transferring the weapons, as well as the Russian cargo ship, Port Olya-3, which delivered the missiles.

“Iran’s attempts to undermine global security are dangerous and unacceptable,” Lammy stated. The move, coordinated with international partners, follows a previous round of sanctions imposed jointly with Germany and France in September.

The sanctions include asset freezes, limiting Iran Air’s ability to operate direct flights to and from the UK and preventing UK citizens and businesses from engaging in financial dealings with the sanctioned entities. The announcement comes on the eve of the 1000th day of the war in Ukraine and a day after the US authorized Ukraine to strike deeper into Russia with US-supplied missiles.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, speaking at the G20 summit in Brazil, reiterated the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary, emphasizing the need to “double down” on aid efforts. The UK government’s action underscores the international community’s growing concern over Iran’s support for Russia’s military campaign.
