Mon Nov 18 18:46:18 UTC 2024: ## Kozhikode’s Illegal Street Vending Creates Pedestrian Hazard

**Kozhikode, November 19, 2024** – The increasing number of unlicensed street vendors in Kozhikode city is causing significant difficulties for pedestrians and threatening traffic flow, according to traffic officials. The Nadakkavu-Pavangad stretch of the Kozhikode-Kannur road is particularly affected, with pushcart vendors encroaching on footpaths and public spaces.

This issue, stemming from poor enforcement and a lack of regular checks, extends beyond this single location. Palayam Junction is described as the worst-affected area, with S.M. Street, Mananchira, and Eranhipalam Junction also experiencing significant congestion. A senior traffic police officer noted that many licensed vendors have allegedly rented out their permits for profit, leading to a surge in unlicensed vendors, including migrant workers and food vendors. The officer also raised concerns that the unrestricted encroachments could impede emergency vehicles.

The City Corporation and Food Safety department acknowledge the problem and claim to be implementing measures to address public concerns. These include actions against illegal vendors and the gradual rehabilitation and relocation of street vendors, citing the Kozhikode beach transformation as a potential model. However, traffic officials stress that stronger legal action from the Corporation, Food Safety department, and police is urgently needed to curb the illegal vending and reclaim encroached pedestrian spaces. Failure to act promptly risks further traffic congestion and the conversion of public spaces into unauthorized commercial areas.
