Tue Nov 19 06:28:06 UTC 2024: ## Bluesky Soars in App Stores, Challenging X and Threads with Nostalgic Appeal

**SAN FRANCISCO** – Bluesky, the decentralized social media platform, is experiencing a surge in popularity, rapidly gaining traction among users seeking an alternative to X (formerly Twitter) and Meta’s Threads. While still significantly smaller in terms of overall users – boasting 18.3 million registered users compared to X’s 259 million daily active users and Threads’ 275 million monthly active users – Bluesky’s recent growth is undeniable.

This week, the app reached the top of both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, fueled by a wave of new users praising its resemblance to the pre-Elon Musk Twitter. Users cite a reverse chronological timeline, reduced hate speech and misinformation, and greater control over their feeds as key attractions.

This growth, experts say, is due to a critical mass effect. As more users join, the platform becomes more attractive to others, mitigating the fear of missing out (FOMO) and ensuring a lively, relevant community. The endorsement of prominent figures like Mark Cuban, who declared Bluesky his primary platform, further boosted its appeal.

Data from Similarweb shows a dramatic increase in Bluesky’s daily active users in the US, with a 73% jump the week after the US election, followed by a further 40% rise to 2.6 million daily users. This contrasts sharply with relatively flat growth for X and an 8% increase for Threads during the same period. X saw a significant drop in users on Election Day, with over 280,000 accounts deactivated globally.

While Meta reports steady growth for Threads, with over 15 million signups in November, Bluesky’s appeal to users seeking a decentralized alternative remains strong. Experts attribute this to a dissatisfaction with Musk’s leadership of X and a desire for greater user autonomy.

However, challenges remain. Bluesky, like Threads, lacks significant advertiser presence. Furthermore, its resemblance to the old Twitter is not universally appealing; Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey expressed concerns about Bluesky replicating Twitter’s past mistakes in content moderation.

Despite these hurdles, analysts remain cautiously optimistic about Bluesky’s potential. The platform’s rapid growth and positive user feedback suggest a sustained future, though its long-term success remains to be seen. Bluesky representatives emphasize their commitment to providing users with more choice and independence from centralized platforms.
