**Nagpur, Maharashtra –** Anil Deshmukh, a former Maharashtra home minister and NCP leader, was seriously injured in a stone-throwing attack on his car this evening in Nagpur district. The incident occurred near Belphata on Katol Jalalkheda Road as Deshmukh was returning from a campaign meeting for his son, Salil Deshmukh, who is contesting the upcoming November 20th assembly elections in the Katol constituency.
Witnesses reported seeing blood streaming from Deshmukh’s head after the attack. Videos and photos circulating online show significant damage to his car, including a shattered windshield and broken windows, with bloodstains visible on his clothing. Deshmukh is currently receiving treatment at Alexis Hospital in Nagpur.
Nagpur Rural Superintendent of Police, Harssh Poddar, confirmed that an investigation has been launched to identify and apprehend those responsible. A large crowd of Deshmukh’s supporters gathered outside the Katol police station demanding swift action.
The attack has sparked widespread condemnation. Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat denounced the incident on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the assault on a former home minister highlights a breakdown in law and order in the state and called for immediate police action. He further urged the Election Commission to intervene to ensure smooth and fair elections.
The incident occurred on the final day of campaigning for the Maharashtra assembly elections, with votes to be counted on November 23rd. The attack raises serious concerns about security and the integrity of the electoral process just days before the election.
