Nagpur, Maharashtra – Senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Anil Deshmukh, a prominent figure in Sharad Pawar’s faction, was attacked on Thursday. According to ANI news agency, unidentified assailants stoned Deshmukh’s car on Katol Jalalkheda Road in the Katol assembly constituency, resulting in injuries. Pictures released by ANI show Deshmukh bleeding from the head. He has been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The attack comes after the conclusion of Maharashtra’s assembly elections. The incident is particularly significant as Deshmukh’s son, Salil, is contesting the Katol assembly seat on behalf of the Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP. The Katol constituency is witnessing a multi-cornered contest, with 17 candidates vying for the seat, including candidates from the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP, BJP, and other parties.
Anil Deshmukh, a veteran politician, has won the Katol seat consistently since 1995 (except in 2014). This year, with a split in the NCP and the BJP fielding its previous opponent, the electoral prospects for Salil Deshmukh are considered challenging.
The news of Deshmukh’s attack comes alongside the unrelated news of the arrest of Anmol Bishnoi, brother of Lawrence Bishnoi, a notorious gangster wanted in connection with several high-profile murders, including that of Sidhu Moosewala. Bishnoi was arrested by US authorities and may be extradited to Canada before being handed over to Indian authorities.
