Tue Nov 19 05:54:34 UTC 2024: ## International Men’s Day: Kochi Voices Highlight Need for Broader Conversation on Masculinity and Equality

**KOCHI, INDIA –** While International Men’s Day (IMD), celebrated annually on November 19th, isn’t officially recognized by the UN, it sparks important conversations about men’s health, well-being, and societal roles. This year, The New Indian Express spoke to several men in Kochi, revealing diverse perspectives on the day’s significance and the challenges facing men in contemporary India.

The interviews highlighted a range of issues, including the societal pressure on men to conform to rigid masculine ideals, impacting their mental health and emotional expression. Several interviewees noted the double standard where men are often judged harshly for prioritizing personal fulfillment over high-paying careers, unlike women who may receive more societal support for such choices. The perceived lack of emotional vulnerability among men was also discussed, with calls for creating safer spaces where men can openly express their feelings.

The issue of privilege was also a recurring theme. While acknowledging the advantages men often enjoy in patriarchal societies, many interviewees stressed the need for men to recognize and relinquish these privileges to foster genuine equality. Some argued that IMD should not be a celebration given the ongoing systemic inequalities, while others saw it as an opportunity for self-reflection and a crucial platform to discuss challenges such as the unfair vilification of men in certain contexts and the misuse of power against them.

Furthermore, the discussions touched on the evolving roles of men in the home, the need for unbiased environments in workplaces and schools, and the necessity for a more nuanced understanding of men’s behaviours and contributions to society. The overall consensus leaned towards a call for a more inclusive and empathetic society that acknowledges the complexities of masculinity and promotes genuine equality for all genders.
